With a spiraling tension that instantly knocks you out of your comfort zone the story of young Victor Frankenstein begins. Victor and Konrad Frankenstein are twin brothers, age fifteen, as we meet them. Konrad is the gifted and more charismatic son and Victor watches him a bit enviously as Konrad talks easily as an equal with the servants. It's one edgy moment after another as these two seemingly spar with each other only to close ranks as quickly. As Victor walks perilously close to the roof's edge and falls with only moments to spare before he will plunge to a possible death, Konrad devises a quick rope of clothing and risks his own life to save him. In a scuffle in the library one day they stumble upon a hidden passage that leds to a macabre library deep in their home. How could something so powerfully mysterious have existed in their walls unbeknownst to them for so long? The library is a hint of the dark events to come. Konrad suddenly falls desperately ill and Victor becomes convinced that only alchemy can save him. Now the dark passages come with twists and turns of hearts, minds and jealousies. Who can be trusted? Does the dark side hold the answer to the anguish? Can it save the life of Konrad? With a masterful sense of suspense, eeriness and place, the spell is cast on us and we read on and on as though passing a bad car accident....hoping for the best result and cringing at the darkness that threatens and beckons. The tension shimmers and the darkness lures. This is a beautifully written prequel to a classic that stands on its own with power and great storytelling. 298 pages Ages 14 and up (gory)
