Picture Book

This is the first book ever published in 'The Railway Series' by Rev. W. Awdry. It came out in 1945 and began the series of 26 books that he wrote. In this book we meet the characters Edward, Gordon, Henry and Sir Topham Hatt. This is where it all began as Awdry wrote down the stories he had created to entertain his own son, Christopher, when he was sick in bed. Edward, Gordon and Henry are all engines. Edward is small and made fun of by the larger engines, but he proves his worth. Gordon is big and boastful and has to learn some humility. Henry is all about his paint job and gets bricked up in a tunnel until he earns another chance to play well with others. The stories inside the book are 'Edward's Day Out,' 'Edward and Gordon,' 'The Sad Story of Henry and Edward,' 'Gordon and Henry.' Other ~~TITLEs in The Railway Series include Edward the Blue Engine, Gordon the Big Engine, Henry the Green Engine, James the Red Engine, Percy the Small Engine, Really Useful Engines, Tank Engine Thomas Again, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Toby the Tram Engine.
