“I knew my dad was going to pass away,” Abby tried to explain, knowing Leise would never understand. “I didn’t know he was going to be dead.”

The first sign Abby North had that something was wrong with her father was the scar on his abdomen.  Soon she is forced to face that he has terminal bladder cancer.  She limps along as his condition deteriorates and she finishes the last year of middle school, with the help of her friends Leise (a new girl) and Spence (a longtime friend).  After her father’s death, the whole family unravels slowly until Abby faces her grief and her growing feelings.  Ackerly, whose own father died of bladder cancer in her teen years, handles the roller coaster ride of growing up and dealing with the death of a beloved parent with realism and accuracy.  Although it may appeal more to girls, anyone who has lost a parent to death, is dealing with a parent with cancer; or is friends with anyone who is grieving the loss of a parent should read this.
