Ten-year-old Sylvie's life has taken a big turn this summer. She "gots to admit it though" she doesn't know what to make of all the newness like the new man in town who is staying with Miz Lula Maye turns out to be Sylvie's father. Sylvie didn't know her father was even alive and now he's just down the road from her. What should she call him? Does this mean Christmas will be all about cookies and smiling on the inside and the outside? Should she add him to her family tree? This change means that one-hundred year old Miz Lula Maye is not only her best friend, she's also her great-grandmother. Her family tree is getting more branches on it. Sylvie struggles to find places to put her new family members on her tree and in her heart. Then, Miz Lula tells Sylvie about her secret holes. "Secret holes was hiding places." Together they delve into the secret hole in Miz Lula's bedroom and take out her special papers. Now, if Miz Lula has a secret hole does that mean Sylvie's mama might have a secret hole with special papers in it too? Sylvie follows Miz Lula's advice and keeps looking until she finds a shoebox filled with secrets. 128 pages
