On December 26, 2004, a giant wave crashed onto the shore of Kenya and swept away a herd of hippos. One little hippo was left all alone stranded on a coral reef. He needed help to get back to shore. Hundreds of villagers worked together to capture the little hippo and then they took him to Haller Park, an animal sanctuary. The workers at the sanctuary worked to create an enclosure for Owen. They put him into an area where a giant tortoise named Mzee lived. Mzee was 130 years old. He liked to be alone. But, when Owen moved in, little by little Mzee accepted him and they became great friends.
