It has been two years since erupting volcanoes created a world-wide catastrophe. Ash still fills the sky, blocking out sunlight, and food and other necessities are increasingly difficult to find. Cities are especially dangerous places, as people will stop at nothing—even murder—to survive. Sixteen-year-old Miles Newell and his family know their only hope is to leave their Minneapolis home for their forest cabin. As they travel on the Ali Princess, the wind-powered vehicle Miles built from bicycles, the Newells discover that danger does not only lurk in cities.
