This is the first in a new series for teens by Kathy Reichs, author of the adult mystery series about Temperance Brennan and the thematic source for the TV program Bones. The main character is Tory Brennan, age 14, who has moved to an island off Charleston, South Carolina, to live with her father. Her mother has recently died and Tory has just discovered that she has a father who didn’t know she existed and that her great aunt is the famous forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. This fast moving, action-filled novel, places Tory and her island friends (all boys) together in a private school in Charleston, and in adventures within the science research enclave on Loggerhead Island. Secret research gone amuck infects the teens with unique abilities when they become involved with several mysteries. The perfect book for a casual read by anyone who likes a good mystery mixed with a little future science gone astray. Anyone who likes the TV program Bones will enjoy this read. The 454-page length will not be a deterrent as the book is an easy and enjoyable read with great characters and lots of action. I am looking forward to the next in the series. Tory Brennan is smart, sassy and tenacious - just like her aunt Tempe. (You may know her from the TV show Bones). After the death of her mother and being reunited with a father that she never knew, Tory lives on a remote island off of the SC coast. She and some other boys from the island have formed a close friendship because they all love to explore the nearby islands - especially Loggerhead Island, which houses the research facility where their parents work. When the friends stumble upon a secret lab housing an unregistered experiment and a set of dog tags that have no business being buried out on that island, they soon find themselves mixed up in a cold case that began decades ago.

Unknown to the teens though, the secret experiment they interrupted has exposed them to an experimental strain of parvovirus that will rewrite their very DNA. They soon find themselves with new and unsettling abilities that will make them question what is happening to them and what they have stumbled upon. (454 pages)
