Becca is a fourteen year old girl whose father has been convicted of defrauding many people out of millions of dollars. He is sentenced to seven years in prison. Becca and her mother move away from Georgia, where all this has taken place, to a small town, Drskins, Ohio. Becca's mom doesn't think it is safe for the to stay in Georgia. They also think that her father is in prison in California, too far to visit.

Becca is now a senior in high school and very much wants to go to college. However, it isn't safe for her to complete her college applications online; nor, is it safe for her to apply for financial aid. Becca comes across a full-ride scholarship given by a family that used to live in Deskins. Becca writes her essay and submits it, and is contacted to come in for a personal interview. At the interview, Becca finds out that the scholarship essay she submitted really wasn't the essay but something else.

Becca must admit to her mom what she has done and they discuss the consequences and form a plan of action. Will Becca's and her mom's plan work? Will Becca ever forgive her father? Will Becca ever be able to go to college? Read to find out.
