One morning a peddler with caps stacked on his head walks up and down the streets of the town calling "Caps for Sale." But, on this morning, no one needs a cap. Not even a red one. He gets hungry but has no money to buy lunch so he walks out of the town, carefully, and lies down under a tree for a nap. When he awakes, there has been mischief afoot. His caps are not on his head any longer. Instead, above him, in the tree, a band of energetic monkeys is now wearing his caps. This makes the peddler angry. He shakes his finger at the monkeys and demands his caps back. Each effort he makes to demand the return of his caps is met with monkey business. This is one of the best read alouds ever written. It's perfect for storytimes.
