Pierce has decided that she wants to leave her life on earth and live with John in the Underworld a dim, twilit world between heaven and hell.

She knows that Persephone ate a pomegranate which is what forced her to live in the underworld so when John offers her a very delectable looking breakfast she eats the waffles assuming she will be able to leave. But are there things that John is not sharing with her?

Then she finds out that her cousin Alex may be in danger for his life and convinces John that they just need to go find him to keep him safe, and then they can come back to the Underworld. She only wants to be with him but she can’t let her family die either.

Once they reach the island of Isla Huesos again it seems that Pierce is fighting for her life at every turn. Her grandmother who is possessed by a Fury only wants her dead and it isn’t long before all the Furies know she is there and there is no safe place for her to be.

But knowing the danger that Alex is in she has to find him before they return but it seems like he doesn’t want to be found.

As they spend time at the cemetery she learns things from the sexton that make her question whether John is telling her the whole truth about the Underworld and her connection there. Can she trust John? More than anything she wants to be with John and truly feels she loves him but staying with him would mean giving up her life on earth. Can she really do that? As she is feeling more confident with her decision events happen that will change her life with John.

As the last scenes unfold in this story the reader will be left hanging and needing to read book #3.
