Boy Named FDR: How Franklin D. Roosevelt Grew Up To Change America

Author Kathleen Krull writes a very flattering biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s early life. The story stops just as Roosevelt enters politics. Krull begins by providing an introduction to prime the reader for the story of FDR by posing the following as an historical mystery: why would President Franklin D. Roosevelt, born to tremendous wealth and privilege, do so much for ordinary people when he becomes president?

Krull focuses on the influential people in Roosevelt’s early life who made deep impressions on a boy whom most would assume would have taken a much different career path. The emphasis on Roosevelt’s early life, excluding his political life, gives the reader a chance to think about how a life doesn’t just begin with one’s emergence into public life but is the sum of one’s life experiences.

A one page epilogue summarizes Roosevelt’s presidential career. In addition, Krull provides a timeline of Roosevelt’s entire life, which includes some of his most enduring quotes. A list of source materials is also attached with works for younger readers marked.
