Nine-year-old Hannah, a blind girl living in the West in 1887, has never been to school. When a new teacher comes, she convinces Hannah's mother to allow her to attend. At first, everything goes wrong, but Hannah does not give up. She shows that "poor Hannah" can learn as well as any of the other children.
