Operation Yes

Sixth-grader, Bo, is the son an Air Force colonel who is also the base commander. Bo is consistently in trouble for one mishap or another and his father is offering a chance to see the Flying Farmer up close and personal if he can change his ways. Gari's mother, an Army nurse, is headed to Iraq and Gari has to leave all she knows in Seattle to go live with her cousin Bo and his family in North Carolina. Gari is determined to stage something that will force her mother to come back to her so they can be safe. Bo and Gari are in the same class and their teacher, Miss Loupe, is amazing. She is teaching the kids through the use of a "taped space" where they can imagine and think and create. When you teach kids those things, they just might start using those gifts in other parts of their lives and that's exactly what happens when Miss Loupe's brother, Marc, loses a foot in Afghanistan. This is a wonderful story about finding your way and opening your heart to all the possibilities of life.

Ready? Line UP! FALL IN! And you'll fall for this timely and generous novel set on an Air Force base during the Iraq War, about an amazing teacher and the students she inspires. No one in her sixth-grade class knows quite what to make of Ms. Loupe, with her short hair, her taped square "stage" on the floor, and the interest in improvisational theatre. After all, their school is on an Air Force base--a place that values discipline more than improv. But her students soon come to love her fresh approach; and when her dear brother goes missing in Afghanistan, and Ms. Loupe herself breaks down, they band together to support their teacher. What starts as a class fundraiser expands into a nationwide effort for all injured troops, and an amazing vision of community and hope.--from the publisher
